Long URLs are everywhere — and they're a nuisance. Whether you're sharing a link on social media, adding one to an email, or printing a QR code on a flyer, a long URL makes everything harder. This guide shows you exactly how to fix that in under a minute using LinkSnip.
Step 1 — Copy your long URL
Open the page you want to share and copy its full URL from the browser's address bar. It could be anything: a YouTube video, a Google Doc, a product listing, or an article. If the URL is missing https://, LinkSnip will add it for you automatically.
Step 2 — Open LinkSnip and paste
Head to linksnip.io. You'll see a large input box at the top of the page with placeholder text reading "Paste your long URL here…". Click into it and paste your URL (Ctrl + V or ⌘ + V).
Step 3 — Click Snip
Hit the yellow Snip button on the right side of the input box — or just press Enter. LinkSnip sends your URL to the is.gd shortening service and returns a short link in under a second.
Step 4 — Copy and share your short link
A result card appears below the input showing your new short link. Click the Copy button and your link is instantly in your clipboard — ready to paste into a message, email, tweet, or bio.
You can also click the short link directly to verify it opens the right page before you share it.
Step 5 — Generate a QR code (optional)
Need to share the link offline — on a poster, business card, or slide? Click the QR button next to any link (either the result card or in your history list). A modal opens with a high-resolution QR code you can screenshot and use anywhere.
Step 6 — Access your link history
LinkSnip automatically saves the last 20 links you shorten in your browser's local storage. The history panel appears below the shortener on the main page. From there you can:
- Copy any short link with one click
- Open a QR code for any saved link
- Delete individual links or clear all history at once
Your history is completely private — it's stored only in your browser and is never uploaded to any server.
Tips for sharing short links
- Social bios. Replace the long link in your Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter/X bio with a short link — it looks cleaner and is easier for followers to remember.
- Email campaigns. Short links don't wrap or break across lines in email clients, improving click rates.
- Printed materials. Use the QR code feature to put your short link on flyers, menus, or business cards — no typing required for the reader.
- Chat messages. A short link is far less disruptive in a message thread than a URL that takes up three lines.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. LinkSnip is completely free to use without registering.
How long do links last?
Links are powered by is.gd and remain active indefinitely while the service runs.
Can I shorten the same URL twice?
Yes. Each shortening creates a new short code, even for the same destination.
What if a site blocks my short link?
A small number of spam filters block URL shortener domains. For those cases, use the original URL.
